AdVocated! "Ruins at Dusk" by Kyilliki

"Ruins at Dusk" by Kyilliki
Caius & Didyme, Romance/Supernatural, Volturi, M, WIP
Summary: Of burning pages, Caius and Didyme, and other things that cannot last.

So often we seek out a story with the goal to make us laugh, to make us love, to leave us in suspense, or even to make is cry. However, with "Ruins at Dusk," I am not only entertained, but am left inspired. I find that not many stories are able to have that effect on me.

I am just in awe of this story, in every way and shape possible. Kyilliki is a brilliant author whose command of the written word is unrivaled. Her Caius is multifaceted in his stoicism. Calculating, yet afraid of showing love, as to him it translates to weakness. Didyme is a frail, deceptively fragile thing with a devastating power. Aro is a man who seeks control, and will exploit even his own flesh and blood to obtain it. And Marcus, dear Marcus, is gentle and kind, but his human-like nature separates him from his own kind.

I found this story when I was searching for a Caius fic without Bella as the leading lady. When I saw the pairing, Caius and Didyme, my mind immediately swirled with the possibilities. A mental image of the forlorn Marcus came to mind, grief-stricken over his lover's infidelity. The thought of a love triangle fueling Caius's spite also took shape as a possibility. What if Caius truly loved Didyme, knowing that she belonged to another? I dove right into "Ruins at Dusk" to find my answers, and immediately recognized the writing style. Kyilliki submitted "The Edge of Crimson," a Marcus/Didyme pairing, for our first annual Softer Side of Villainy Contest. Honestly, I felt like a dumbass for not checking out her other stories sooner. Though today I'm adVocating "Ruins at Dusk," I highly recommend you check out everything this woman has ever written. I'm fairly certain she walked out of the womb with the ability to weave a story already mastered.

Deviant Guest Review by @shelikethesound: "The War is Over" by @MariahajilE

"The War Is Over" by MariahajilE
Angela & Edward, Angst/Drama, All Human, MA/NC-17, Complete
Summary: Lies. Betrayal. Pain. A story of finally getting what you want and hurting everyone in the process. AH, ExB, ExA, AxBen. M for language and lemons.

"The War Is Over" is told from Angela’s point of view, giving us a glimpse into what it’s like to be the other woman. She’s best friends with Bella but is having an affair with Edward, Bella’s boyfriend. The subject matter is very controversial, polarizing, and not for the faint of heart.

I’ll admit it. I’ve never been a fan of stories centered around cheating. I’m a tough customer to convince that kind of treachery can be redeemed. And at first glance, this seems to be just another one I’d flounce. Once I began reading, though, I couldn’t walk away from it.

From the start, Angela knows what she’s doing is wrong. And she agonizes over it. Her feelings for Edward are what makes her commit such an unforgivable act. It’s her way of getting what she’s always wanted, even if all Edward can give is his body.

Deviant Guest Inquisition: Savageward from @vampiremama's "Beautiful Savage" (with @credoroza)

Before you read the interview with Savageward, The LUV'NV wants to thank Credoroza for her wonderful support. Along with sending in guest reviews, she has promoted all of our events on her blog, Fandom Fanatic, and included us in her Affiliate Spotlight segment.

When Credoroza stated in the post her wish for having thought of our Inquisition feature, RaindropSoup cornered her with sweet words, not so subtle cajoling, and a bribe of her own Inquis banner to do a character interview for us. Being the fabulous and ever-helpful woman she is, Credoroza agreed—with enthusiasm.

We cannot adequately express our appreciation for the fandom, for the women who have shared their amazing stories and characters, those who have taken the time for others and kept sites going. Much LUV to Credoroza, for she is one of them. A nuzzle and a savage backside grope for readingmama for her time and endearing Savageward. Please be sure to leave both of them some love, whether here, on their blogs, or by reading and reviewing "Beautiful Savage." You can learn more about the story in Credoroza's review, here.

And while you're at it, if you're not a work (or at least don't have screen peckers, I mean, peekers), check out the manip of Savageward.
NSFW and a good deal of unf. *mutters* Rather lengthy unf.

Now, you're really curious about him, aren't you? Well, as with all Inquisitions, beware. There can be spoilers. But no one heeds warnings anyway, so without further ado, here he is ... SAVAGEWARD!

Deviant Days — Completed Fic Staff Picks

Sorry! We forgot to publish this post on the 21st, kicking off the Completes portion of Deviant Days.
Here's the completed Deviant we thought you just have to check out.

"Bitemarks & Bloodstains" by forthelongestday
Jasper & Bella, Drama/Romance, Dogma, AU-Twilight, MA/NC-17
Summary: Two days in Phoenix is all it takes to make Jasper realize that mere curiosity cannot explain his obsession with the human who has so thoroughly caught Edward's attention. AU

Arianna-Janae: I'm a little embarrassed that this is the first Jasper & Bella story that I've read from start to finish. It's just a testament to forthelongestday and the amazing depth of her characters.

This story starts out as a canon pairing from Jasper's point of view. From the beginning, Jasper shows a strange interest in Bella which he casts off as little more than a curiosity. Things change when he becomes involved. After sitting idly by while Edward dictates Bella's life course without her input, Jasper makes Bella a promise. It's a promise that will make him go against his family and against his supposed mate. It's a promise that will likely be the death of him.

It turns out that's the case, because the Jasper we know dies and is reborn into a different person.

We only have a few more deviant days left, with a couple more deviant guest posts coming up.
Share your favorite completed E/B or well-known non-E/B by giving a deviant guest review!
We'll try to get it up ASAP for this month's Deviant Days, but if not, until the next time … July.

Deviant Guest Review by @credoroza: "Beautiful Savage" by @Vampiremama

"Beautiful Savage" by readingmama (@vampiremama)
Edward & Bella, Romance/Drama, All Human, MA/NC-17, Complete
Summary: After getting lost in the woods on a camping trip, Bella finds a man who is living a different life. Can two such different worlds mesh when communication is nearly impossible?

After getting lost in the woods on a camping trip, Bella finds a man who is living a different life. Can two such different worlds mesh when communication is nearly impossible?

His eyes jumped out at her first. Intense and dark, so much that at first glance, one would probably just assume his eyes were brown, but they were in fact green. His eyelashes were long and curled in a way that any woman would be jealous of. His face was tanned and covered in a thick beard that was almost a burgundy color. His hair, although dirty, was a color that Bella had never seen before. Not quite red and not quite golden, it couldn't be called anything but bronze. Then her eyes shifted down his neck, and she found herself gasping again. He was naked. He was naked and he was pressing his face to hers, rubbing his dusty cheek against hers and then down the back of her neck, locking them together at the crook.

When I stumbled across this story, I was enthralled, yes, enthralled. There have been some "wild man" Edward stories posted in the past, but none were able to hold my attention like "Beautiful Savage."

Vampiremama's writing is so visual. I can picture myself in her story, in the woods, with Edward. And that is what I love about any story, seeing myself in the story. The mark of a gifted writer.

The story starts out with a not so wilting violet Bella, she is feisty and head strong. She knows what she wants, she just isn't sure how to go about it. She is also a little lost in life. She has a boyfriend, Ben, her first love and she has friends, but they don't really seem like friends to me.

Lovelorn — "Tread Softly" by @idealskeptic

"Tread Softly" by idealskeptic
Angela & Jasper, Drama/Romance, Post-BD, MA/NC-17, WIP (Completed 8/30/2012)
Summary: When Angela Weber is forced to take on a new identity and leave her old life behind, she finds the most secret residents of Forks - the Cullens. She finds herself growing ever closer to the vampires, especially Jasper, as they work to protect her. Warnings: Character Deaths

♥ What gave you the idea for this story? Did anything inspire you?
The main inspiration for Tread Softly was the fact that I love the dynamic of Jasper and Angela paired together. I’d written one story that featured them before, and followed it with a sequel, and I missed writing them. My earlier story about them was much more about healing, hope, and happiness. I wanted to try something different, something more adult and deeper if for no other reason than to challenge myself.

♥ In non-canon, Jasper fics, most authors write him with Bella. Why did you choose Angela instead?
The simplest reason I chose to write Jasper with Angela is because, of the few humans in Twilight, I feel like I identify best with Angela. Angela is one of the characters in Twilight who I feel could have been developed into something much more and become an integral part of the story. So I wanted to do that.

I do realize that most authors write Jasper with Bella when he isn’t with Alice and that’s a small part of the reason I didn’t – it’s been done so much. Couple that with the fact that Bella is far from my favorite character while I’m firmly Team Jasper, and it’s easy to see why I chose Angela over Bella.

♥ All authors love their characters. Tell us what you love about yours. What traits are you particularly fond of? Are there any that you based off yourself, people in real life, or another character from a book?
If I were a character in Twilight, I’d want to be Angela.

I like that she’s the one who sits with the Bella and the Cullens, when they return to school and even makes friends with Alice. I like that she’s the one who passes no judgment on anyone or anything. I like that she’s the one that Bella could turn to, if only Bella wanted to turn to someone.

Alice was all of those things for Jasper and so much more. Since I decided to write a story where Alice has been killed, he needed that in someone else – but a little differently. Angela is the most accepting, steadfast, and steady character in the series … she’s perfect for Jasper when Alice can’t be there.

Deviant Guest Review by @credoroza: "Take What You Want" by @Purelyamuse

"Take What You Want" by purelyamuse
Edward & Bella, Humor/Angst, All Human, MA/NC-17, WIP
Summary: Based on January 2012 witfit prompts. Though Bella's known Edward for years, they've just started hanging out. His crass, smelly boy self is not appealing, but his looks and charm are. How will she deal with her feelings for the gross, flirty boy?

Dirtyflirtward has crept in to my heart. Pretty much the same way Masen did, slowly and permanently.

Purelyamuse has written two very different and completely diverse characters that grab at your heart and will not let go. And like "Masen Days," "Take What You Want" is a story that will touch every emotion and hold you captive. That's not to say there wasn't hesitation on my part in approaching the story because it is a witfit. I dislike witfit's more than drabbles. I have absolutely no patience for them. But every once in a while, I am surprised.

I loved "Masen Days." I still re-read it from time to time. I decided to trust purelyamuse's story telling ability again. I am so glad I did, witfit or not.

"Take What You Want" is an amazingly funny and romantic story. This is an Edward like no other. Dirtyflirtward. I mean who writes an Edward like that? Edward is utterly perfect. Purelyamuse definitely had other ideas. Her Edward is crass, obnoxious, flirty, dirty, and smelly. Literally! And you will love him instantly.

Vouched! Eric Yorkie, The Van Helsing of Forks by @duskwatcher

Rosalie & Eric, Humor/Supernatural, AU, M, Complete
Summary: When Eric discovers the Cullens are vampires, he makes it his mission to 'get the goods' on them with hilarious results. Good thing the Cullens have a sense of humor! Twilight. Canon.

This fic was just the funny pick-me-up I needed. There are so few stories out there about the humans in the Twilight books, and even less about our geeky friend, Eric. This story takes place during Twilight, where we get to see Eric's unique take on things. As it turns out, Eric Yorkie happens to know a thing or two about vampires. After all, he's seen his fair share of horror movies.

It's an icy day in Forks when Tyler's van comes careening through the parking lot, heading straight toward Bella. Eric just happens to be taking pictures for the school paper, and continues to snap away during the whole incident. When he studies a blurry picture a little bit closer, he realizes that the blur bares a remarkable likeness to one Edward Cullen.

Join Eric as he uncovers the truth about the Cullens. Will he tell anyone? Will Edward's ability uncover the secret Eric carries? Will Eric be able to warn Bella about the Cullens' dark secret? Well, you'll just have to read Eric Yorkie, The Van Helsing of Forks to find out.

Lovelorn — "Walk With Me" by @Kraftychik

"Walk With Me" by Kraftychik
Jacob & Bella, Drama, AH, M, Complete
Summary: Bella faces the biggest challenge of her life. Can she do it alone or will she seek comfort from a kindred spirit?
Warnings: Features situations of illness and death.

What gave you the idea for this story? What inspired you?
Well, I have written some sappy B/J stories already, and I was thinking how a drama would be really good. I didn’t really
come up with anything when I sat down to write, so I just gave up. Then this story just came to me in a dream.

All authors love their characters. Tell us what you love about yours. What sets them apart?
I love this Bella because she is much stronger than SM’s Bella. She deals with something huge in her life, and she is
comfortable on her own, which is how I think Bella should be. I also love Jake in this story because he’s dealt with his
own stuff and even though he’s there for Bella, he doesn’t feel the need to constantly fix her. He’s also just a sweet,
loving guy that I adore.

Why did you choose this pairing? I have always loved Bella and Jacob together.
I have always felt that they were cheated out of their happy ending, so I love to play around with these two. Jake’s
personality is a lot like my husband (loyal, sweet, funny, protective, and caring), so he’s dear to my heart.

How is it different than the other Twilight fics posted with similar themes?
I actually have never read another Twilight story with this theme. So I really wouldn’t know how it’s different to be
honest. I just wrote what was in my head and heart.

Advocated! "Built on a Lie" by @FrozenSoldier

"Built on a Lie" by FrozenSoldier
Angela & Jasper, Suspense/Drama, AU-NM, T, WIP
Summary: Angela Weber held a secret she couldn't share with anyone. What happens when that secret lands her in the middle of the forest with the truth about the Cullens real identities fresh on her mind?

I am sure that, like so many other readers, my first love for non-canon pairing fics started with a vampire named Jasper, and as such, I have read many Jasper fics—too many to count, many similar to the next, and the majority being him and Bella. Also like most first loves, I moved on. At least, I thought I did.

I'm not going to lie and say that I can never tire of the man. I stopped reading Jasper fics over a year ago, having grown bored of him and, honestly, very picky with how he's portrayed. Yet, I could never pinpoint what I was looking for exactly, not having found the perfect canon Jasper and AU circumstances.

That is, until I read Built on a Lie by FrozenSoldier.

For one, the protagonist is Angela, someone I find so much more endearingly human than Bella, and FrozenSoldier has captured the lens-hidden beauty—her shy and muted exterior, the observant yet never pushy or judgmental disposition, as well as her quiet will to do what's right, her insecurity as woman, and how she dreams—but never acts—big and is okay with the fact.

Two, although it starts in New Moon with the infamous birthday scene and picks up three years after Angela discovers the Cullens' secret, Built on a Lie is original with its absence of her and Jasper being mates (so far). From the moment she sees him, Angela is infatuated with Jasper. But that's all it is—an infatuation, a crush borderlining obsession—because she doesn't actually know him, has never really spoken to him, and he is with Alice.

As ridiculous as it sounds, the notion is relatable. Who hasn't crushed, borderline obsessed, over someone they can't have? (*coughs* Rob? Taylor? Peter Facinelli? Sound familiar?) But what's more, what I love, is that FrozenSoldier made it realistic. The more time Angela spends with Jasper and learns who he is, she questions herself. Each interaction with him is not only less than ideal but also very uncomfortable.

Deviant Days — WIP Staff Picks

Every quarter, we have a chance to deviate from our mission of only featuring the little known, non-E/B fics.
We may or may not take advantage of it, and each staff member only gets one pick.

Strictly Non-canon Lovers — we're asking you to step out of your preference box this month and check out
the E/B or well-known non-E/B WIPs that have compelled a couple of us to deviate.

(See, E/B lovers … We do love Edward!)

"Penal Code" by BellaFlan
Edward & Bella, Humor/Romance, AH, MA/NC-17
Summary: Undercover Cop Edward Cullen wants some excitement on his beat. Bella, whom he mistakenly thinks is a hooker, desperately needs to snap out of her funk. How deep is Edward willing to go undercover to get the girl?

Arianna-Janae: I love pretty much everything BellaFlan writes, and Penal Code is no different. The summary alone had me hooked. Good cop, Edward Cullen, is undercover, attempting to bring in a hooker. After all, if she looks like a hooker, walks like a hooker, and has some strange obsession with your "pudding," she must be a hooker, right? Follow these two through their awkward hook-ups, misleading innuendos, and major fuck-ups. Never underestimate a girl and her love for a man's pudding. *Chuckle*

"The Biology Project" by solostintwilight
Edward & Bella, Romance/Hurt/Comfort, AH, MA/NC-17
Summary: Edward's a sex addict resisting treatment, Bella's a girl who just wants to get laid already. What happens when they get paired up for a Biology Project? Bio Lab could get interesting...

Wayward Girl: This is a drabble-ish fic brought to us by the author who wrote In Your World. I love her (somewhat) short chapters and quick updates. Solostintwilight has made these characters her own, I especially enjoy her Jasper and Charlie. Every chapter is a joy to read and leaves me itching for the next update!

V Wicked Tease 03/30 – 04/05

"Shattered" by Lacrimosa Moon
Edward & Bella, Drama, AU, MA/NC-17
Summary: Some would do anything for their heart's desire. Bend the laws of physics, live a lie, defy their family, even sacrifice their mate. In their minds, the end justifies the means. But, in the aftermath, more than one life could be shattered.

*** Chapter 4 Teaser ***
Elena followed Edward, who was half-carrying Bella, and a chattering Alice down to the plane’s cabin. She glanced at Bella, swaying in his arms, deep, dark circles prominent under her eyes. Even though she looked like she could drop dead at any moment, her bony, white knuckles clung to him. It was as if she was afraid that he would disappear if she didn’t hold on tight enough.

As they stood in line waiting on the jet bridge, the scientist within Elena was dying to test Marcus’ partial mind shielding technique. She looked behind her, calculating her escape in case she’d failed. She started softly at first.

Edward.

Nothing.

She tried again a little louder.

Edward.

Edward kissed Bella's forehead, oblivious to Elena's mental call.

As they walked to their seats, Elena decided to try one last time before the flight attendants started loading the economy class passengers.

Edward!

Edward didn’t give any indication of hearing her mental call.

Elena, grinning, settled into the seat across the aisle from them. She was proud that Marcus had taught her well and that her lotion seemed to be working. Just as she finished buckling herself in, she lifted her head and met a pair of light amber eyes.

“There is no way you are going to get away with it.”

Oh shit! Alice. Elena gulped.

Deviant Days — One Shot Staff Picks

So we're deviating from our mission a little. We still read E/B and the well-reviewed non-E/B.
You can't hardly blame us. But check out the one shots that compelled us to deviate.

"Someone Like You" by IReen H
Edward & Bella, Romance/Tragedy, AH, MA/NC-17
Summary: Age of Edward Judges Choice Winner: Bella struggles with mental illness, Edward struggles with fidelity. Story set in 1950 with flashbacks through the 40s. Title based on "Someone Like You" by Doris Day. Fair Warning - Macabre. AH, AU

Wayward Girl: I can't say enough good things about this one-shot. It is heart-wrenching and beautifully written. You will go from hating Edward, to loving Edward, then crying you're eyes out for Edward. Not only is this one shot well written, but the plot is original and will keep you guessing until the end. Don't miss out on this story, go read "Someone Like You" by IReen H!

"Cadence of Humanity" by shoefreak
Demetri & Edward, Angst/Hurt/Comfort, MA/NC-17
Summary: Edward experiences one of the greatest sorrows of his existence for the second time. As he tries to cope, Demetri reminds Edward of what it is to feel human, and Edward recognizes the benefits of immortality. Slash/AU

RaindropSoup: Ever wonder what it would have been like if Edward got his wish and Bella lived out her life human, thus dying at one point or another? Well, look no further. "Cadence of Humanity" is from Edward's POV of an 88-year-old Bella on her deathbed, and God, is it heartbreaking. There is no animosity between the two, and the emotion behind first-love is captured. Nostalgia and some regret shine, making it feel canon and so darn beautiful. As per usual to shoefreak and her fics, it's well written and breathtaking. My own heart stopped.

Every month, we rec under-appreciated one shots we simply adore. So get comfy, try something new by checking out these short reads, and be sure to leave them some love.

"Jake and Ness Finally Do it" by silveraure
Renesmee & Jacob, Humor, MA/NC-17
Summary: Five years after Breaking Dawn... Emmett and Rosalie give Jacob and Nessie access to their "love shack" for their first night together... will it be as awkward as we all hope? Sit back and enjoy this ridiculous and irreverent glimpse into the future!

Arianna-Janae: This is the first story I have read with Jacob as the leading man. I know, it's not something I'm proud of. After reading "Wild at Heart" by silveraure and falling head over heals in love with it, I decided to give Jake a chance and read "Jake and Ness Finally Do it." First, you have to understand that this is not a serious story and was never intended as one. So, if you're looking for a greater meaning and a higher purpose, you'll need to look somewhere else. This story is full of side-splitting awkwardness, and chock-full of some of the greatest one-liners I've read in a long time. All I have to say is "sparkly vampire spluge." And ... go!

"Willing" by justaskalice
Jasper & Alice, Horror, T
Summary: She was the predator, he the prey. "I know exactly what I'm talking about. I've seen the future, Jasper Whitlock. It ends in one of two ways. I die, or I don't." Jasper/Alice AU

RaindropSoup: I'm a sucker for bittersweet fics, and "Willing" definitely hits the spot. Beautifully written and stunning in every way possible, the story left me frozen and speechless before I finally muttered an "Oh, my God." Twice. The prose and tone are fantastic. The emotion and the scene are compelling, and though Pre-Twilight, the story and the thought behind it is original. To top it all off, the spot-on characterizations and wonderful use of "You've kept me waiting" and "I'm sorry, ma'am" sated my current hunger for a rare fic, bloody heavy in canon. "Willing" is not only a must-read but also a one shot you'll never forget. Check it out and leave justaskalice some much-deserved love. I wouldn't be surprised if you add it to your favorites list, as well.

"The NonImprint" by TwilightMommyof4girls
Sam & Bella, Romance/Drama, M
Summary: Bella and Sam form a relationship after Edward leaves. He doesn't imprint on her. Is their love enough? How does it play out?

Wayward Girl: "The NonImprint" gives you a snapshot into the lives of Sam and Bella. After Sam finds Bella in the forest, the two form a relationship and eventually become engaged. Bella soon finds out she is pregnant and couldn't be happier with her life. Unfortunately, Sam sees Emily and imprints. Heartbroken, Bella flees to Port Angeles to attend college and raise her baby alone. Little does she know that Sam is just as distraught as her. Will he be able to fight the imprint or will Sam have no choice but to abandon his budding family for a magical union?

This one-shot covers a lot of ground in a short amount of time. It's fast-paced and for once I was rooting against an imprint! Poor Bella is so set on sacrificing herself for Sam's happiness, too bad she didn't realize that he didn't want that. It was nice to read a different take on imprinting:
I loved Sam with my whole heart. I wasn't his imprint, that fact would never change. But what I was, was even better. I was chosen.
While an imprint can be permanent, being chosen by the one you love is much more satisfying, at least for Bella. If you're a fan of Sam/Bella fics, definitely check out this one-shot.

Have you read one of fics mentioned above?
Tell us your thoughts in a comment below and give the fandom even more reasons to check out
these one shots!

One shots recs are tweeted various Fridays for six months.

"Wild at Heart" by @sleuthinpumps

Photobucket
"Wild at Heart" by silveraure
James & Victoria, Drama/Western, AU, MA/NC-17, WIP
Summary: Cold, deadly, and haunted, James Wilder is a frontiersman in the Old American West who becomes the unwilling protector of his boss' frightened and abused daughter Victoria Childress. Pre-Twilight, Dark Themes, Vampires

I can't tell you how many hours I spent searching for this De Vill's AdVocate. Last weekend, I sat down at my computer and decided to search for a story with Victoria as one of the main characters. I wanted to find a well-written story with an interesting story line. Victoria, as a villain of the Twilight books, is often written off as purely evil. I wanted to find a story that gave her character more dynamic. I wanted to know the human Victoria in order to understand the vampire Victoria. After bookmarking several stories, and reading more than a few, I finally started reading Wild at Heart. I knew, two sentences in, that this was my winner. I was immediately hooked.

Have you ever really considered the differences between James and Victoria's vampiric gifts? James is the tracker—a vampire with the ability to hunt people. Victoria, on the other hand, has a knack for escape—for staying hidden. One is the very antithesis of the other.

Wild at Heart opens with an introduction to the Hunter. A man crouches, waiting for the perfect moment to pull the trigger. His hands are shaking, and his heart hammers in his chest, but not from fear. No, this man feels the pure thrill of the hunt. Adrenaline runs through his veins in anticipation of the kill. He paralyzes his victim, preferring to deliver the final death blow himself. James slices through the doe's neck and slings her body over his shoulder, relishing the sensation of the animal's warm blood washing down his back.
