Deviant Days — Completed Fic Staff Picks

Sorry! We forgot to publish this post on the 21st, kicking off the Completes portion of Deviant Days.
Here's the completed Deviant we thought you just have to check out.

"Bitemarks & Bloodstains" by forthelongestday
Jasper & Bella, Drama/Romance, Dogma, AU-Twilight, MA/NC-17
Summary: Two days in Phoenix is all it takes to make Jasper realize that mere curiosity cannot explain his obsession with the human who has so thoroughly caught Edward's attention. AU

Arianna-Janae: I'm a little embarrassed that this is the first Jasper & Bella story that I've read from start to finish. It's just a testament to forthelongestday and the amazing depth of her characters.

This story starts out as a canon pairing from Jasper's point of view. From the beginning, Jasper shows a strange interest in Bella which he casts off as little more than a curiosity. Things change when he becomes involved. After sitting idly by while Edward dictates Bella's life course without her input, Jasper makes Bella a promise. It's a promise that will make him go against his family and against his supposed mate. It's a promise that will likely be the death of him.

It turns out that's the case, because the Jasper we know dies and is reborn into a different person.

We only have a few more deviant days left, with a couple more deviant guest posts coming up.
Share your favorite completed E/B or well-known non-E/B by giving a deviant guest review!
We'll try to get it up ASAP for this month's Deviant Days, but if not, until the next time … July.

Deviant Days — WIP Staff Picks

Every quarter, we have a chance to deviate from our mission of only featuring the little known, non-E/B fics.
We may or may not take advantage of it, and each staff member only gets one pick.

Strictly Non-canon Lovers — we're asking you to step out of your preference box this month and check out
the E/B or well-known non-E/B WIPs that have compelled a couple of us to deviate.

(See, E/B lovers … We do love Edward!)

"Penal Code" by BellaFlan
Edward & Bella, Humor/Romance, AH, MA/NC-17
Summary: Undercover Cop Edward Cullen wants some excitement on his beat. Bella, whom he mistakenly thinks is a hooker, desperately needs to snap out of her funk. How deep is Edward willing to go undercover to get the girl?

Arianna-Janae: I love pretty much everything BellaFlan writes, and Penal Code is no different. The summary alone had me hooked. Good cop, Edward Cullen, is undercover, attempting to bring in a hooker. After all, if she looks like a hooker, walks like a hooker, and has some strange obsession with your "pudding," she must be a hooker, right? Follow these two through their awkward hook-ups, misleading innuendos, and major fuck-ups. Never underestimate a girl and her love for a man's pudding. *Chuckle*

"The Biology Project" by solostintwilight
Edward & Bella, Romance/Hurt/Comfort, AH, MA/NC-17
Summary: Edward's a sex addict resisting treatment, Bella's a girl who just wants to get laid already. What happens when they get paired up for a Biology Project? Bio Lab could get interesting...

Wayward Girl: This is a drabble-ish fic brought to us by the author who wrote In Your World. I love her (somewhat) short chapters and quick updates. Solostintwilight has made these characters her own, I especially enjoy her Jasper and Charlie. Every chapter is a joy to read and leaves me itching for the next update!

Deviant Days — One Shot Staff Picks

So we're deviating from our mission a little. We still read E/B and the well-reviewed non-E/B.
You can't hardly blame us. But check out the one shots that compelled us to deviate.

"Someone Like You" by IReen H
Edward & Bella, Romance/Tragedy, AH, MA/NC-17
Summary: Age of Edward Judges Choice Winner: Bella struggles with mental illness, Edward struggles with fidelity. Story set in 1950 with flashbacks through the 40s. Title based on "Someone Like You" by Doris Day. Fair Warning - Macabre. AH, AU

Wayward Girl: I can't say enough good things about this one-shot. It is heart-wrenching and beautifully written. You will go from hating Edward, to loving Edward, then crying you're eyes out for Edward. Not only is this one shot well written, but the plot is original and will keep you guessing until the end. Don't miss out on this story, go read "Someone Like You" by IReen H!

"Cadence of Humanity" by shoefreak
Demetri & Edward, Angst/Hurt/Comfort, MA/NC-17
Summary: Edward experiences one of the greatest sorrows of his existence for the second time. As he tries to cope, Demetri reminds Edward of what it is to feel human, and Edward recognizes the benefits of immortality. Slash/AU

RaindropSoup: Ever wonder what it would have been like if Edward got his wish and Bella lived out her life human, thus dying at one point or another? Well, look no further. "Cadence of Humanity" is from Edward's POV of an 88-year-old Bella on her deathbed, and God, is it heartbreaking. There is no animosity between the two, and the emotion behind first-love is captured. Nostalgia and some regret shine, making it feel canon and so darn beautiful. As per usual to shoefreak and her fics, it's well written and breathtaking. My own heart stopped.

April One Shot Staff Picks

Every month, we rec under-appreciated one shots we simply adore. So get comfy, try something new by checking out these short reads, and be sure to leave them some love.

"Jake and Ness Finally Do it" by silveraure
Renesmee & Jacob, Humor, MA/NC-17
Summary: Five years after Breaking Dawn... Emmett and Rosalie give Jacob and Nessie access to their "love shack" for their first night together... will it be as awkward as we all hope? Sit back and enjoy this ridiculous and irreverent glimpse into the future!

Arianna-Janae: This is the first story I have read with Jacob as the leading man. I know, it's not something I'm proud of. After reading "Wild at Heart" by silveraure and falling head over heals in love with it, I decided to give Jake a chance and read "Jake and Ness Finally Do it." First, you have to understand that this is not a serious story and was never intended as one. So, if you're looking for a greater meaning and a higher purpose, you'll need to look somewhere else. This story is full of side-splitting awkwardness, and chock-full of some of the greatest one-liners I've read in a long time. All I have to say is "sparkly vampire spluge." And ... go!

"Willing" by justaskalice
Jasper & Alice, Horror, T
Summary: She was the predator, he the prey. "I know exactly what I'm talking about. I've seen the future, Jasper Whitlock. It ends in one of two ways. I die, or I don't." Jasper/Alice AU

RaindropSoup: I'm a sucker for bittersweet fics, and "Willing" definitely hits the spot. Beautifully written and stunning in every way possible, the story left me frozen and speechless before I finally muttered an "Oh, my God." Twice. The prose and tone are fantastic. The emotion and the scene are compelling, and though Pre-Twilight, the story and the thought behind it is original. To top it all off, the spot-on characterizations and wonderful use of "You've kept me waiting" and "I'm sorry, ma'am" sated my current hunger for a rare fic, bloody heavy in canon. "Willing" is not only a must-read but also a one shot you'll never forget. Check it out and leave justaskalice some much-deserved love. I wouldn't be surprised if you add it to your favorites list, as well.

"The NonImprint" by TwilightMommyof4girls
Sam & Bella, Romance/Drama, M
Summary: Bella and Sam form a relationship after Edward leaves. He doesn't imprint on her. Is their love enough? How does it play out?

Wayward Girl: "The NonImprint" gives you a snapshot into the lives of Sam and Bella. After Sam finds Bella in the forest, the two form a relationship and eventually become engaged. Bella soon finds out she is pregnant and couldn't be happier with her life. Unfortunately, Sam sees Emily and imprints. Heartbroken, Bella flees to Port Angeles to attend college and raise her baby alone. Little does she know that Sam is just as distraught as her. Will he be able to fight the imprint or will Sam have no choice but to abandon his budding family for a magical union?

This one-shot covers a lot of ground in a short amount of time. It's fast-paced and for once I was rooting against an imprint! Poor Bella is so set on sacrificing herself for Sam's happiness, too bad she didn't realize that he didn't want that. It was nice to read a different take on imprinting:
I loved Sam with my whole heart. I wasn't his imprint, that fact would never change. But what I was, was even better. I was chosen.
While an imprint can be permanent, being chosen by the one you love is much more satisfying, at least for Bella. If you're a fan of Sam/Bella fics, definitely check out this one-shot.

Have you read one of fics mentioned above?
Tell us your thoughts in a comment below and give the fandom even more reasons to check out
these one shots!

One shots recs are tweeted various Fridays for six months.

Vouched! "Letting Go of Maybe" by Weebble

Emmett & Bella, Friendship/Romance, All Human, M, WIP
Summary: Bella is a good student that minds her own business, and Emmett is finally starting his career as a teacher. Unfortunately, when their paths cross, they're forced to face truths they're not ready for. AH, AU, BxEm.

"Letting Go of Maybe" is a slow burn type of fic, and more realistic in my opinion. Mr. McCarty is Bella's new English teacher and while he feels attraction to his student, he knows it is wrong to act on these feelings. They don't jump into a forbidden romance like most characters in these fics, and it is such an interesting read. The angst is high in this story, but a good kind of angst (If that is even possible, lol).

The authors of this story have done great with their characterizations. Jasper is Bella's best friend and their relationship is as much fun to read as the main pairing:

"You know, Bella, I'm not sure To Kill A Mockingbird is a set text for AP Chem class," Jasper drawled, peering over Jess' shoulder into my backpack. "Just saying." His blue eyes sparkled with amusement as I pulled the tattered copy of my favourite book back out and smacked him around the head with it.

"Just because you can't read, Frank, does not give you the right to rag on those of us who can."

He grew out of his phase of wearing Fedoras and calling everybody doll-face in middle school, but he would always be Frank to me - ever since he stood up on stage in the sixth grade, in front of the entire school population, and sung Come Fly With Me while attempting to tap dance.

"You break my heart, Boo," he retorted, smirking at his use of the nickname I had hated since elementary school. He quickly hot footed it out of the classroom when I started to growl and rise from my seat, wielding the book dangerously in the direction of his head once more.

"Catch you later, ladies," he hollered from the doorway, before scampering off to his next class.

He laughed loudly as I shouted after him, "Yeah, you better run, Hale!"

You can tell the authors really took the time to create original characters for us to read. It's the little things like this that make me really fall in love with a fic.

Like I said in a previous post, Emmett/Bella fics can be hard to come by, well-written ones at least. I came across this story, read the summary, and was instantly intrigued. Go check out "Letting Go of Maybe" and let me know what you think!

Wayward Girl Found Completion with "In My Veins" by @ReneeFF

"In My Veins" by ReneeFF
Emmett & Rosalie, Romance/Humor, All Human, MA, Complete
Summary: Rosalie has spent most of her life trying to impress other people. While helping her father pay off his gambling debts, she falls in love with the enemy. Will she be able to save herself and her father before it's too late? Or will love blind her? AH/OOC.

This is another first for me: an Emmett Rosalie story, that is. Before "In My Veins" I had no interest in this pairing. I was looking for something different to read when I happened upon this fic. The summary interested me so I decided to give it a try...so glad I did!

Rosalie Hale is a single mom who has had a rough life ever since she met Royce King III. Her abusive ex-boyfriend disappeared when he found out about the pregnancy; Rosalie is left alone to raise her baby and take care of her disabled dad who happens to owe Carlisle Cullen a lot of money.

Needless to say, Rose doesn't have a lot of time. When she isn't taking care of her family, she is working at a hair salon to pay off her father's debt. While on her lunch break, Rosalie meets a man who infuriates her and interests her at the same time. Guess who?

Emmett is intrigued by the beautiful woman he met and avidly pursues Rosalie. Too bad he is the son of her father's enemy. That's right, Emmett is the son of Carlisle Cullen. When Emmett realizes the situation at hand, it's already too late. He cares about Rosalie and doesn't want to tell her the truth about his family.

"In My Veins" will have you on the edge of your seat yelling at the screen "JUST TELL HER ALREADY!". You can't help but feel sorry for both characters and hope that things will work out for them. "In My Veins" is well written, only fourteen chapters, and will keep you enthralled the entire time. Go check it out and let the author know we sent you *winks*

That's all this week, until next time...

Vouched! "Time Makes all the Difference" by jlf44

Jacob & Bella, AU-Twilight, T, WIP
Summary: Age 22, Bella moves to Forks to live with Charlie following the death of her mother. How much of a difference can four years make?

This is one of those fluffy reads that makes you smile through the whole thing. It is an interesting spin on Twilight that I have yet to read. Bella arrives in Forks four years later; the Cullens are gone, Bella finished culinary school and decides to buy the diner in La Push. Like the title says, time makes all the difference. When Bella is reunited with her childhood friend, their lives will be changed forever. This is a must read for all you Jake lovers out there, click the link and enjoy!

Wayward Girl Found Completion with "Not Strong Enough" by @ojmjff

"Not Strong Enough" by Oh Jasper My Jasper
Jasper & Paul, Drama/Romance, All Human, MA, Complete
Summary: After falling in love with a boy of his dreams at a summer job away from home, Paul discovers that Jasper's family is moving to Forks. Will their secret relationship survive in a world where they are on opposite sides of a town divide? AU/AH/Slash

I am not one to read slash fics but this unique pairing pulled me in. "Not Strong Enough" is a very interesting read; each chapter is told in Paul's point of view and switches from present day to flashbacks of meeting Jasper at summer camp:

Meeting Jasper confused the shit out of me. On the surface, we could not have been more different. He was lean and pale with chin length, blond wavy hair. A city boy, he was quiet and introspective, a musician and an artist. I was brawny with well-developed muscles, dark russet skin and closely-cropped black hair. Compared to him, I was a loud, small town hick, pretty much only interested in maintaining my physique. And yet, despite the fact that we seemed to have nothing in common, I was drawn to him from the first moment I saw was pretty disturbing because the biggest difference between us was that he was openly gay and I was most assuredly not. At least, up until that point, I had never considered the possibility that I was anything but straight. But the instant we were introduced upon our arrival at camp—the instant my eyes met his and I got lost in the lustrous pale green pools—I couldn't stop thinking about him.

"Not Strong Enough" tackles a lot of issues: class differences, struggles with identity, and the general high school drama. It is a short read, just seven chapters, so don't miss out! It's really heartwarming and so well-written. Make sure to leave Oh Jasper My Jasper some love and tell her we sent you. :)

This was my first review of a slash fic, you might be seeing more from me in the future! Let me know if you are a slash lover, I'd love to have some recs...especially if Paul is involved. *winks*

That's all this week, until next time...

March One Shot Staff Picks

Every month, we rec under-appreciated one shots we simply adore. So get comfy, check out these short reads and try something new, and be sure to leave them some love.

"Those Who Wait" by BookwormBaby2580
Mike & Bella, Romance, MA/NC-17
Summary: Because nice guys shouldn't always have to finish last.

Wayward Girl: I have found yet another wonderful story written by BookwormBaby2580. This time, though, she paired up Bella with Mike Newton. *gasp* I know you are skeptical, but "Those Who Wait" has me willing to root for Mr. Golden Retriever himself. The author has created a very likable (and believable) Mike who you can't help but love. This one-shot is well written and has all the elements of a good story, go check it out!

"Lepidoptera" by smexy4smarties
Renee & Charlie, Hurt/Comfort, Post-BD, M
Summary: lepidoptera: Gr. lepidos "scale" and pteron "wing." Any of a large order of insects, including butterflies, that as adults have four wings covered with minute overlapping and often brightly colored scales. Brush the scales away and... Canon. NEHEA entry

RaindropSoup: Smexy4smarties is refreshingly smart. Brilliant, really. She has taken what is often a predictable, shallow, and overlooked character and given her a depth that left me aching—for both Renee-centric fics and the character herself. Renee is not who we think she is, not for the reasons we assume and always portray. Using the bare-bones of a character SM left us, Smexy4smarties has fleshed out a canon Renee with a haunting voice, a painful perspective, and startling realism, all the while answering a few questions. What happened between her and Charlie, when they were young and when she left? How do Bella and the Cullens—and Charlie for that matter—tie the loose ends that was once Bella's human life, post-BD? "Lepidoptera" is not about a how a seemingly scatter-brained woman thinks, but how she feels and is perceived. It could not have been better written. It's a one shot you'll never forget. Be sure to stop by and leave some love.

(Be aware that this was written for The Never Ever Happily Ever After Contest and tied third place in the public vote. No fluff or rainbows—except for Renee's outfit—here, which suits this spot-on characterization perfectly. And because it's sadly beautiful, captures the feel and essence of "Lepidoptera," along with further explaining the title, here's the quote used in the one shot:
"Imagine what it would be like to hold a butterfly in your hands, something bejeweled and treasured, and to know that, despite your devotion, it is dying by degrees." — Jodi Picoult, Harvesting the Heart)

Wayward Girl Found Completion with "Crashing Head On" by @LisaHR79

"Crashing Head On" by HopelessRomantic79
Emmett & Bella, Romance/Friendship, All Human, MA, Complete
Summary: Tempers flare and personalities clash as Bella cares for an injured Emmett, but does that hate translate into love? AU/AH.

One of the most unloved couples in the Twific fandom is Emmett/Bella. Anyone out there who enjoys the pairing knows that good Emmett/Bella fics are sometimes a challenge to find, I usually have to search for awhile before I come across something I really enjoy. "Crashing Head On" was one of the first Emmett/Bella stories I read and has stuck with me ever since.

Emmett is a star hockey player at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who has a promising career ahead of him. Bella goes to the same school and is dating Edward. Bella and Emmett's mothers are best friends and when Emmett is in a car accident, they ask Bella to help him recover. The only problem? They can't stand each other. Here is what Bella has to say about their relationship:
It was the first time I was actually glad Emmett and I had gone to the same college. He and I had never gotten along, no matter how much Renee and Esme tried.

We were just two different people. It was totally cliché, but I was the nerd, and he was the jock, simple as that. We'd never run in the same crowd, and had slipped into something like cool indifference leaning towards loathing when we were teenagers. Our moms had hoped we'd become a couple, but there was no way in hell that was ever happening. He always had a new girl on his arm, and I was a serial monogamist. The only two guys I'd ever even kissed were Jacob and Edward, and I didn't even want to know how many women Emmett had locked lips with, or worse.
Needless to say, Bella and Emmett are not happy when "The Mothers" propose the arrangement, but they know there is no other choice. What starts as a relationship full of bickering and annoyance turns into something more when the pair spends more time together.

HopelessRomantic79 always sucks me in to her stories and "Crashing Head On" is no exception. If you are looking for your first Emmett/Bella story, give this one a try, you won't regret it!

If you know of any good Emmett/Bella stories, I'd love to read them. Leave a link for me in the comments below, would ya? *winks*

Until next week...

Wayward Girl Found Completion with "Never Saw That Coming" by LJ Summers

"Never Saw That Coming" by LJ Summers
Leah & Charlie, Humor/Romance, Wolf Pack, MA, Complete
Summary: Winner of Best Overall in the Twilight Gem Pearl Round, this is the story of how Leah Clearwater met her biological match in the last man she would have expected. Rife with snark, Leah's spirit isn't broken, but made whole. Sixth in my Imprinting Series.

When I first stumbled upon this story, I did not think I would enjoy the pairing. Leah and Charlie?! They couldn't be more different or more incompatible...or so I thought. How wrong I was! LJ Summers has written an original imprinting story that is funny and very enjoyable to read.

Leah has finally moved on from Sam thanks to her imprint: the one and only Charlie Swan. It is difficult for Leah to be apart from her imprint, but she is afraid to let Charlie in on the secret. Instead, she stalks him. That's right, Leah stalks Chief Swan. It is amusing to read her inner monologue and awkward encounters with Charlie. The confident and snarky Leah Clearwater disappears when she's around her imprint:
He stopped, pursed his lips under his mustache – I never thought a 'stache was sexy before I imprinted on Charlie Swan, but I sure thought his was – and looked me dead in the eye. I felt my mouth go dry but I took a long breath through my nose to try to calm down. I was doing great, but then he did something I didn't expect.

At all.

He reached out to me and surrounded one of my shoulders with his hand. "So, did ya mean it, Leah? You and your mom taking pity on an old guy?" He chuckled so I could see he was joking as he slowly dropped his hand.

But inside, I was torn. It wasn't my mother I wanted him to see – it was me! What the hell could I do about that?

"Well, I – I haven't really a – asked her," I stuttered. Stuttering! When did I start that nonsense? I was turning into Jell-O, right here on the street! "I could, um, invite Bella and the twins, if you want. Make it kind of a deal, you know." I'd have to tell Bells what was up, too. Then, she could help me cook! Yeah! Charlie needed someone who could feed him, that was for sure... I could learn to do that. I could totally learn. Of course.
Looks like Leah has turned into a bumbling Bella *snickers*. With Leah's rambling thoughts and Charlie's awkward demeanor, this fic is filled with good laughs. It is a quick read -- only 8 chapters -- but tells a great story in that short span.

"Never Saw That Coming" is part six of the author's series Imprinting: The Mating Imperative. You can view the other installments on her fanfiction profile.

That's all from me this Saturday. I will see you next week with another completed story! Until next time...
