*** Chapter 10 Teaser ***

I sat out there for what seemed like hours, pushing the swing back and forth and back and forth.  It was freezing, of course, and there was about two feet of snow on the ground, but the cold felt refreshing.  It was eye opening, reminding me that this was, in fact, reality and California was still three weeks away.  I was lost in my own thoughts, staring at the spot where Jake had been leaning against the porch.

"Hey," came a voice from the sidewalk.  I looked up at Rose, holding a bottle of Jack Daniels and my coat.  She'd pulled her hair back into a ponytail and thrown on her pajamas and boots before heading over.  "You're gonna catch pneumonia," she chastised.

"Does it matter?"

She shrugged and took another step closer, pulling her coat a little tighter around her body and offering mine with her extended arm.  "Alone on Christmas Eve?"

I nodded.

"Me too."  She looked over to Emmett's house and sighed.  "Emmett had some things to do before his mom came to visit tomorrow, so -- he went home."

I nodded again, returning my attention to the empty spot in front of me.

"My parents are in Boca," she explained, taking two steps up onto my porch.  "Wanna get drunk?"

Pursing my lips, I looked up at her and smiled.  "Ya know, Rose -- I'd say I loved too, but I don't think that would quite cut it."

She nodded her head to the inside of my house and opened the door to walk in.  "C'mon.  You and I got some talking to do."

"We would pretend you were our rescuers, our knights, and one day, you were going to break us free from the prison of her bedroom on the second floor," I admitted. I could feel the faint burn of a blush gracing my cheeks.

"Wow, little girls are creepy."

"Yeah well, we would do that until Rose's mom started babysitting Jake. Then, he made himself the king and said I didn't need a rescuer. That the King would protect me and save me."

"That little shit," Edward added playfully.

"I know, right?" I laughed and looked out the window at the passing car next to me.

"In the land of trapped Princesses, the Kings are the evil step fathers," Edward teased, using a tone that sarcastically suggested it was very common knowledge.

"Yeah, eight year old Jake ruined everything," I joked.

"And a full decade later, nothing much's changed," Edward added, not really teasing at all.  

"As you leave me, please, would you close the door. And don`t forget what I told you. Just cause you`re right, that don`t mean I`m wrong. Another shoulder to cry upon."

I smacked his arm playfully. "Remember that time your dad had that birthday party for you and Emmett at Chuck-E-Cheese —"

"Yeah," Edward continued. "And Jake threw up all over my presents?"

"And then Alice fainted and got it all over her." I started cracking up.

"We were quite a crew, huh?"

"Still are."

He pulled one side of his mouth into a crooked smile and licked his lips. "Now, instead of puking on my presents, he's —"

"Hey," I interjected. He didn't need to finish that sentence for me to know where he was going with it. "You're going to see him in less than twenty four hours. You better get it together."

"I just wanna use your love tonight, yeah. I don`t wanna lose your love tonight."

“Maybe you are right.” Carlisle decided that a semblance of agreement with Eleazar would be met with the least amount of resistance. “But what if you are wrong? What if she is telling the truth? I can’t risk having her as an enemy. That’s not what Dad would want. He wouldn’t want me to throw my brother in the gutter, even if his mother is of... questionable morals.”

An agitated Eleazar considered Carlisle’s contention. While the premise held water, he didn’t think for a second that he could be wrong about Elizabeth. Only one kind of woman would agree to accept money from a man in return of keeping her liaison with him a secret; a kept woman. The fidelity or integrity of such harlots could not be relied upon. There was no telling how many men she had bedded at the same time as Kyle. The fact that she had not yet come forward to claim a part of the Cullen fortunes on her son’s behalf only solidified his deductions. It was quite simple really; she would’ve if she could’ve.

“Very well then. It should be easy enough to resolve. Jenks tells me they can do miracles in the labs these days. He has one of the best forensic labs in the country on retainer. A DNA test will tell us one way or the other. I’m sure she won’t object to providing us with a little blood sample from her son,” Eleazar suggested innocently.

I'm on a roll with the Peter fics lately. Here's another one that I simply had to share. It's called Belonging by forthelongestday.

This story is in Charlotte's point of view (no Bella here). forthelongestday breathes life into a character I have never before seen written with this depth.

It begins as Charlotte opens her eyes to her new life as a vampire. The first person her new gaze falls upon is the very man who took her life. She isn't welcomed into this new existence by a loving family - ready and willing to patiently guide her as she begins her life as a vampire. No, she's thrust into the life of a soldier where there's no such thing as a learning curve. No positive reinforcement. No second chances. Stripped of her clothes, her humanity, and her individuality she must adapt to this new life - this hell. She quickly discovers that only person she can depend on in this new world she's been forced into is herself.

The same man who has promised her that he won't harm her, has killed two of her comrades without provocation. Everywhere she goes, she feels his watchful eyes on her - senses his presence and feels the absence of it. Her only relationship, if it could be called that, is with a man she knows she should hate - Peter.
