If you discovered yourself through love what would you sacrifice?
Notice Me is an emotional roller coaster full of money, power and love, which takes the fascinating characters on a whirlwind romantic flight of fear and fancy. One man wants Shannon, the heroine, to notice him, and with his hand-written love letters she is helpless to resist. The terrible dilemma facing Shannon once she finds him is an impelling one. When she finally decides to give in to an intimidator’s threats and marry him, she does it only to save the love of her life.
Notice Me is one of those books I went into expecting something completely different because of the summary, so I feel I need to clear the air first. While I did enjoy the book despite the vague and confusing synopsis, it isn't about a man who writes secret-admirer letters and one day reveals his face—and later his true colors, with threats and ultimatums—like I originally thought.
Shannon Davis lives in the shadow of her beautiful best friend Megan Fields, the daughter to one of the largest, most influential business owners in the world. But Shannon doesn't mind. She and Megan saved each other. Both a little lost and trying to find their place in the world, they found a kindred spirit in their opposite personalities, looks, and world status.
When Megan finally finds love, love finds Shannon in form of anonymous letters, the signature being only "Notice Me." Although Megan and Shannon usually share everything, Shannon begins to keep these notes to herself and she soon realizes those around her aren't who she thought they were. When lives and relationships become the stake, she has to choose between loyalty and love, between who she was and who she is, along with the two different futures she always wanted.
I immediately liked all the characters. Shannon is self-effacing, responsible, and a bit of a nervous wreck. Megan, while material and maybe a little vain, is caring and fun; her personality is so well written and balanced that she embodied the nice spoiled girl, clueless yet not seeming intentionally harmful considering her upbringing and how awful she could be. So genuine and hot at the same, Charlie would be gobbled alive by women everywhere if he were real. And Will is the "good" guy, the underdog, the one who might be too responsible and bland and thus overlooked, but he is secure, the "safe" choice.
I think my biggest issue with this book is the dialog. So much of it felt very ... Hallmark card or Lifetime channel Special because no one talks or expresses their feelings in such a gooey manner, not all the time anyway and definitely not men with every other breath they take. The plot, like I said, isn't what I expected. The overall book is fluffier, with the first half about the secret admirer (who isn't a big surprise when revealed).
But the rest of the story picks up as secrets begin to pile up before unraveling and focusing on everyone else in the bigger picture, especially at the end when everything turns for the worst and one detail I hadn't considered smacked me in the face. Most of the characters shocked me, either being better or worse than I anticipated. I also admired Shannon and Charlie more as the story progressed, and I found myself unable to put the book down after reaching a certain point.
Overall, a fast, easy read. I'd recommend it to readers who enjoy butterfly romance, whirlwind drama, and premises in which things are too good to be true and the male is sensitive as well as a determined hero.
