"Satisfied they were safe from being discovered, Jasper stopped. Facing the other three, he did his best to calm himself before speaking. Not an easy task. “You two know better. We told you to stay home.”

Diane clenched her hands. “Yeah, not a good way to start this off. You had to know we weren’t going to stay home for months. Just admit you didn’t want us here, and that you were wrong and we’ll get on with whatever it is we need to do.”

“What we—as in Jasper and I—need to do is get on with it.” Scott waved a finger between the two sisters. “What you need to do is leave. Go back home so we know you’re okay so we can do our job.”

“No, I don’t think so.” Alice twirled a finger around a short lock of her hair. “You boys need us.”

Jasper stepped closer to his wife, despite his anger. “Why, Alice? What did you see?”

“I don’t really know.”

Her husband growled.

“You know how this works. All I can tell you as that I keep seeing you alone and in trouble.”

“No, Alice!” Jasper began to pace. “I don’t like this—you bein’ there, around that!”

“You mean around you,” Diane accused. “We’ve been together long enough and faced enough together to be honest. Just say it, Jasper. You don’t want us to see what you and Scott have to do. Which is completely ridiculous, by the way!”

“Fine.” Jasper’s voice went cold and quiet. “You want honest? We don’t want you here. This is goin’ to get ugly. More people are goin’ to die. Innocent people. What you saw—nearly a hundred deaths—that happens every single day here so I can feed the Tribunal’s army.” His hands fisted as he failed to keep a hold of his temper. “I don’t want to be here—to do this, but I don’t have a choice!”

Diane didn’t flinch as Jasper’s angry words echoed around her. She took a breath to make sure her tone stayed even. “We watched and we handled it.”

“Is that right?” He stepped closer to his sister. “And this just me bein’ completely honest here, but…” He pointed to her eyes. “…looks like one of you didn’t handle things so well recently.”
