“Magic is just like love, Allai. It won’t wait for permission before it destroys you.”

Like sand in an hourglass, Allai’s future is dwindling away. She’s spent her entire life fighting the Mages who threaten humanity, and dreams of someday eradicating magic. But all it takes is an anonymous phone call for the truth to spill out: Allai is the one thing she despises most.

She’s a Mage.

Though ancient law mandates Allai’s death, she still has one last chance of survival. His name is Drake Rhaize, and he swears he can lead Allai to a sanctuary for Mages. Allai hasn’t seen Drake in years, but she remembers him as the Demon boy who used to hold her close and softly whisper that he’d keep her safe. But Drake has changed since then: He’s now suspected of murder, and has been out-casted for betraying his own kind.

While Allai doesn’t trust Drake, she has no choice but to put her life in his hands and hope he can get her to safety. Because Allai’s father has hired a pack of Demons to bring her back to him, dead or alive–and Demons never stop the hunt.

Frost Fire is a “Good Reads and Good Deeds” book. All net proceeds for Frost Fire go toward the Dysautonomia Youth Network of America, a charity that supports youth with medical conditions affecting the nervous system.

Metal-winged demons and all-powerful mages in a political war. A young, forbidden love that stems from loneliness and fear, spanning over years and distance. Secrets, betrayals, and family feuds. Frost Fire was full of surprises. Even though I read the summary, I expected angels because of the cover. I also expected full fantasy and a decent plot. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised with urban fantasy, a complex plot, even deeper-cutting inner conflicts, and various leagues of demons with clicking metal wings.

Drake, one of the most powerful demons—if not the most powerful—is ordered to assassinate the girl he's ever had a connection with. Allai, thought to be a human and the only one adopted and trained by a demon, is suddenly on the run—though, not from Drake, but from the society that raised her. As these two flee across the country together, they discover how far their families and races will go to meet their own ends. The depth of the betrayal is not what they, nor how the readers, anticipated. I foresaw some of the twists, but a couple took me by surprise, and one even made my jaw drop.

I wished Allai was as strong as implied, though. She supposedly trained to fight, but we never see any of this training. She needed saving often and constantly seemed to be curled into a ball of shock afterward. I also would've liked to know more about her and Drake's relationship when they were younger. We only get a couple glimpses. Without more, their present relationship seem too much, too fast. I couldn't understand the connection because I didn't see enough of what built it up to the I'd-die-and-kill-for-you level. The flashbacks of Drake with his malicious father were so gut-wrenching and emotionally palpable, and I enjoyed Drake's struggle in that respect and how he much grew as a character to stand up to him. If only I got more in terms of Allai, I would've given this four stars.

Despite that, I'm looking forward to the next book. Frost Fire was a wonderful read and good beginning to a series. Recommended for fans of first loves, a dose of angst, and complex intrigue where the lines of the good and the bad are blurred.
