When life falls to pieces, answers lie in The Space Between

After a month-long dance tour through Italy, 20-year-old Leni Drago returns to Georgia to care for her great-uncle, only to find him gone, the home they shared empty and any evidence he ever existed wiped out. All that’s left is a journal she can’t open.

Jeric Winters has been searching for a piece of his past for over a year, only to reach a dead-end in Georgia. When an urgent and magnetic pull draws him out of his hotel room, he comes face-to-face with the beautiful dancer who’s been haunting his dreams day and night.

Jeric’s one to stay away from—a bad-boy, hit-it-and-quit-it type—but Leni can’t escape the fervent feelings between them. As their own existences begin to crumble around them and shadowy forms that are more monsters than men attack, they realize there’s more to the connection between them than physical fascination.

To solve the riddle their lives have become, they must embark on a journey that requires them to face their pasts and release their true souls. And they must do it fast—dark ones from another world are closing in, intent on killing them. Permanently.

Rich, sensual, and original, The Space Between  is a stunning story about fractured souls, romantic reincarnation, and the revolving, conscious choice to do right no matter the adversity and potential personal cost. When Leni Drago, a dancer with unfulfilled dreams, meets scarred, deaf, bad-boy Jeric Winters, their souls recognize each other but with ominous results. Their pasts and everything that made them begin to disappear—public records, the memories of those who knew them, even the people themselves. One word continues to be whispered in their heads, matching tattoos suddenly appear on their bodies, and every time they touch, they feel as if they're falling ... to their doom.

I didn't really know what to expect going into this novel, but from the very first page, I was engrossed. Kristie Cook has major story-telling skills and created such an imaginative storyline. For once, the notion of soul mates is believable, beautiful, and natural, not just some flimsy plot device or off-handed explanation.

Joy and bliss blends with an otherworldly eroticism. The spiritually profound meets, enfolds, then sways with everyday life and human nature. Everything felt ... right. Just as it should be. With a smooth writing style, the author pulled me into her characters' heads with their own unique voice and caught the tone of each scene. The tension kept building and building, yet I also snorted, burst out laughing, and at times got the chills.

Although there was a moment I feared the switch between two storylines and multiple POVs (third-person), I found myself looking forward to each one and not impatiently. The characters were imperfect, vulnerable, realistic. No paper cutouts, they couldn't have been more perfect and lovable. Even the secondary characters were fantastic and intriguing. And the chemistry ... the smut ... holy smokes! Tasteful, not quite explicit, but vivid and ... oomph. I was left speechless—still am—and I've never been more jealous of two souls meeting in my life.

I strongly suggest you read The Space Between, especially if you're looking for a New Adult Contemporary Romance seamlessly woven with paranormal elements. I've never read Kristie Cook's works before this but will be amending that ASAP.

Favorite lines (out of many):

I want to know every bit of you on the outside before I feel you on the inside.
****
You’re the Coke to my Jack. For eight years, life’s been one bitter bottle of whiskey after another. One burning shot after shot. But then you come along. Life’s still harsh, but you make it sweeter. Easier to swallow.
****
One soul, one being. We shared thoughts and feelings and even a body, and although it sounded awkward, I felt as though we lived the most natural, most perfect existence. Like we were beyond human, above the selfish and greedy self-centered ways of this world. We were about us and them. There was no me.
