One night can change everything ...

Two years ago, Leigh Anne Davis shocked everyone in tiny Fairhope, Georgia when she broke up with her wealthy boyfriend to attend an Ivy League university a thousand miles away. At school, she finds a happiness and independence she’s never known.

Until one terrifying night takes it all away from her.

With no place else to go, Leigh Anne heads home to reclaim her old life. A life she worked so hard to escape. On the outside, she seems like the same girl everyone has always known. But deep inside, she’s hiding a terrible secret.

That’s when she meets Knox Warner, a troubled newcomer to Fairhope. His eyes have the same haunted look she sees every day in the mirror, and when she’s near him, the rest of the world fades away. But being with Knox would mean disappointing everyone all over again. If she wants to save what’s left of her old life, she has no choice but to say goodbye to him forever.

Only, the trouble with goodbye is that sometimes it’s about courage and sometimes it’s about fear. And sometimes you’re too broken to know the difference until it’s too late.

The Trouble With Goodbye  is an encompassing novel about a young woman's courage. Against all plans and expectations, good-girl Leigh Anne Davis broke up with her wealthy boyfriend, left behind family, friends, and security, everything she'd ever known, and found independence by attending an Ivy League university.

Yet one innocent, everyday decision led to one life-alterating night and stripped not only her happiness and independence but also choice and confidence. Leigh Anne was raped, and when another victim speaks out against the same instigator, Leigh Anne must dig deep to find not only the courage with which she left her town, but more. The courage to move against her family controlling her future and wishing to bury the incident. The courage to recognize and accept change, especially within herself. The courage to speak up, and if not that, to try to be honest with herself.

It is never a victim's fault. No one deserves it. Not ever. And when it happens to someone else, the actions of others' cannot be claimed by anyone but them.

I have to say The Trouble With Goodbye  is one of the better-delivered New Adult novels dealing with rape. The author wholly captured the tumultuous emotions of rape victims—the self-doubt of whether they could've dealt with things differently or not; if they can trust the choices they make, and the desire to not make decisions because of that; to hide and grasp for the old even when it makes them miserable; the fear of speaking up, how people can question and doubt, pry and judge. Sarra Cannon caught all that and more with such clarity and realism.

Even better, the story never dragged despite all the inner turmoil. The emotional impact was strong, but the delivery was somehow light enough that the book was neither depressing nor too slow and frustrating. The romance was the same, perfectly woven throughout with natural interaction, deep chemistry, a well-paced bond over troubled pasts, and a very strong male protagonist who is quietly intense and so supportive that I ached. I'll definitely be reading more by the author.
