In the Arena, you're either a killer or a victim.

If survival meant murdering an innocent person in cold blood every week, could you do it? Are you able to stick the knife into your opponent's heart while they look at you with fear in their eyes? Life in the Arena turns everyone into sinners.

A homeless boy is kidnapped from the streets and finds himself imprisoned in a far more horrifying place: the Arena, a place where teenage boys fight to the death for the pleasure of various lowlifes in a modern gladiator pit.

The Arena is the brainchild of Ryker, an ex-convict addicted to alcohol, gladiatorial-esque combats, and money. When not devising new ways for boys to kill each other, he's ruling his small empire with a ruthless fist, rewarding his guards with sex slaves and punishing those who oppose him with barbaric executions.

Renamed Dog, the boy from the streets must turn himself into a killing machine if he is to continue surviving, but as he leaves a trail of bodies in his wake, the ghosts of slain boys haunts him and the violence threatens to wake a beast inside him.

Allegra, a slave girl in the Arena and a victim of Ryker's constant abuse, is his only key to salvation. She has lost everything already—her family, her innocence, and her dignity—while her will to live hangs on by a thin thread. Can she save Dog's humanity before she too succumbs to the horrors of the Arena? With death casting it's long shadow over everyone, how can anyone survive?

Seeking to defy Ryker as Dog rises to power as his champion, the stage is set for something to give in this murderous world of young gladiators.

A tale about survival, tragedy, and human perseverance, the complete Shadow of Wrath is the first book in the Sins of the 7 series.

Fans of edgy and controversial dystopian books will love Shadow of Wrath.

From Chapter One

The strange men in suits had a ravenous look in their eyes that the boy found unsettling. They were like wolves in human skin and the boy had lived long enough on the streets to know when he was being hunted.
“What’s your name?” one of the men asked sweetly. The boy took a step back into the alleyway, where he had slept earlier in the day. He never trusted a man whose smile didn’t reach his eyes.
“Come on, you must be hungry,” the smiling man said as he pressed forward while the other four strangers trailed behind him; a pack on the heels of their leader. “I’m here to help you son. What’s your name?”
“I don’t have one,” the boy replied. It was the truth.
He lived with nothing, not even a name.
They backed him further into the alleyway, cornering him against the brick wall layered with graffiti.
“There’s no need to run. In fact, there’s nowhere to run,” the smiling man said. “Why don’t you come with us and we’ll take you somewhere safe? You can have a hot meal and a nice bed. I promise. I always keep my promises.”
The nameless boy scoured the alleyway for any potential weapons: a rock, a couple of broken beer bottles, and some garbage cans. They would do.
“Get him into the van,” the smiling man ordered.
They converged on him like vultures on carrion, but the boy fought back savagely. There was only one thing on his mind.
Survival.

Ever since he opened that book of Fairy Tales when he was a kid, L.W. Patricks loved reading and spent countless hours recreating a parallel universe where Red Riding Hood kung-fu kicked the wolf in the jugular and Snow White discovered a spell to merge all the dwarves together to form a Super-Dwarf that tossed the evil step-mother into the sun.

With this love for reading and writing, he took it to the next level and published a book. Sadly no super human fairy tale characters (but it’s always been on his radar).

L.W. Patricks is the author of Shadow of Warth and the literary architect behind the upcoming Sins of the 7 series with book one, Awake the Ghosts, to be published late 2013. His debut novel Shadow of Wrath is now published by Strange Crow Publications.

So in a nutshell, what he's been telling everyone is some half-baked story of how he's the spawn of a typewriting chimp and a literary ninja and he eats unicorns to sustain his crazy imagination. It may or may not be a cover up ... but he likes to leave things open for interpretation =).

His short fiction works has been published by Crow Toes Quarterly Magazine, Fiction and Verse literary magazine, and upcoming Denizens of the Dark. He enjoys writing contemporary fantasy with an emphasis on creating urban mythology for his stories.

L.W. Patricks was born in Toronto, Ontario, where he graduated from University of Toronto’s Fiction Writing course. He has travelled all over the world including Germany, Netherlands, Italy, France, Spain, Czech Republic, Austria, United Kingdom, Thailand, Hong Kong, Cambodia just to name a few. His diverse experience amongst other cultures provides inspiration for his stories.

He currently lives in Toronto with his wife where he enjoys the hot summer days and the cold winter nights.

  3. It's like a male version of The Hunger Games--only without the love triangle (I think/hope)!And who doesn't love gladiators?

  4. Thanks everyone for commenting and taking interest! I love this blog too, the layout is great! And @Katherina...i try to make relationships realistic so the possibility of a happily ever after in such a brutal environment maybe slim...then again it could be the next 50 Shades of Wrath. j/k, j/k...before I embarrass myself any further, you can download a preview for free! https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/294971
