Tara Collins just wants to be normal. Everyone else wants her dead.

Tara’s eccentric aunt raised her to be fearful of the world and follow the rules. But after her aunt’s death, Tara is ready to take control and experience life for the first time. But she quickly discovers that everything she’s been told is a web of lies. Determined to solve the mystery of who she is truly, she hires private investigator to help her uncover the truth.

Christian Roth is more than your average PI. A vampire and ex-demon hunter, Christian lives among the humans, trying to be “normal.” But recently, things seem to be falling apart. There’s a crazed demon hell-bent on revenge hunting him down, and a fae assassin on the loose with an unknown target. And the Order he abandoned desperately needs his help.

As the secrets of Tara’s past collide with the problems in Christian’s present, she finds herself fighting her attraction to the dark and mysterious investigator. Falling in love does not fit into her plans at all, but Tara soon learns that some rules are meant to be broken.

Wow! When I started Bittersweet Blood, I was not expecting the unique world Nina Croft created: Vampires in a secret society, hunting and feeding off demons; ancient mages and trained witches; assassin fae and bodyguard werewolves as well as other shapeshifters—all buried deep in sensuality and darkness while still being FUN.

I was immediately transported into a world that felt urban yet fantastical, yet Nina Croft also eased me into the dynamics, craftily mixing traditional vampire lore, smokin' hot contemporary romance, chilling horror, and suspense. What's more, the plot was complex, intertwining different pasts from different lives and on so many different levels. It encompassed more than the main characters and held a stunning amount of mystery as well as a soul-deep ache when all is revealed.

While the tension and buildup was palpable throughout, the characters and their antics could still make smile, laugh, sigh, or tear up a moment later, too. Everyone was unique and contributed to the storyline or scene, and I loved the main characters as much as the secondary ones. I couldn't help but care about them as individuals and as a group. The relationships were so wonderful that they really felt like a unit. I was thrilled to learn this book is part of the series because I didn't get enough of these characters and cannot wait to learn whose story we get next!

In the beginning, Tara and Christian's relationship starts off a bit too cliché for my tastes. They had the insta-attraction and overwhelming lust occurring between them, and as a vampire, Christian just loves her unique smell. Tara was also a bit too blasé and accepting of the fact that Christian's a vampire. But eventually, their relationship came off more natural.

And the smexing ... holy. If you're a fan of erotic bloodletting, I definitely suggest you try Bittersweet Blood. The scenes aren't over the top or explicitly descriptive, yet they were vivid and a shift-in-your-seat, look-over-your-shoulder, naughty-type of guilty pleasure.

Then there was the ending. Action-packed and joining all the story threads together, it truly was bittersweet. It's my favorite flavor, and I've never read Nina Croft's works before, but I plan to because she delivered it well. I highly recommend Bittersweet Blood  to those looking for a new Paranormal Romance series that's a little heavier on the Urban Fantasy plot and has a wide cast of lovable characters, dashes of wicked humor, and absolutely delicious, non-gratuitous erotica.
