In the first of Ian Fleming's James Bond novels, 007 declares war on Le Chiffre, French communist and paymaster of the Soviet murder organization SMERSH.

The battle begins with a fifty-million-franc game of baccarat, gains momentum during Bond's fiery love affair with a sensuous lady spy, and reaches a chilling climax with fiendish torture at the hands of a master sadist. For incredible suspense, unexpected thrills, and extraordinary danger, nothing can beat James Bond in his inaugural adventure.

First of all, this book is awesome! The description of the characters and locations really takes you into the story and makes you believe that you are actually there with James Bond. Now, for those of you who have seen the movie, I will say that the characters are very different from the ones in the movie. In this first Bond novel, James is slightly older, dark headed, and cold as ice to those he works with. He thaws out some with our leading lady, Vesper, but only just so. Their friendship and later union is drawn out and frought with danger and near death experiences. The ending is tragic and definitely leaves you wanting more. Ian Fleming delivers this special agent Bond with the old school ideal of what an agent should be and you want to read more of the adventures just to see what Bond is going to do next.
