Blog Tour {Review}—Binding Vows by Catherine Bybee

by Catherine Bybee
Book #1 of MacCoinnich Time Travel series

Amazon B & N Goodreads
Duncan MacCoinnich’s task… Travel to the twenty-first century Renaissance Faire, deflower the Druid virgins, and go home. Only his job is not so easily accomplished with the virgin in question, Tara McAllister. Time is running out. The evil is closing in on them both.

Tara finds Duncan irresistible after what was supposed to be a mock Hand-fasting binds them. When Duncan whisks her to his home in Scotland she could accept that. But, can she forgive him for taking away her modern life when she finds herself in the sixteenth century? And is it love they feel? Or something else?

Binding Vows  was a wonderful surprise, mixing classic Historical Romance and Fantasy. Time travel occurs into both the future and the past, from Scotland and Southern California. Druids are found at every turn and have an old-age war with witches.

The female protagonist, Tara, has attitude and major backbone for a fragile virgin, whereas Duncan may be formed like a solid rock and can expertly wield a sword but has a tender heart. I adored their interaction. They were cute even when they bickered and made me chuckle throughout the book. While I wasn't a fan of Tara's friend Cassy, I especially liked Duncan's family and the relationships. They were all so warm and jumped from the page. Sometimes you just want to a hug a character; each of Duncan's family members were one of them.

I really liked the book. Don't get me wrong; it's not without its faults (minor editing issues, predictability, a little cheesiness), but I enjoyed the story immensely. Binding Vows  was exactly the light, fun read I needed. I stayed up well into the morning because I couldn't put it down. I'm looking forward to reading book two, Silent Vows.
